What is Consecutive Interpreting and Where is it Used?

The oldest tradition of translation is interpreting between people who speak different languages, and there are different interpreting methods.

In consecutive interpreting, the speaker waits after a few sentences and gives the interpreter time to translate what has been said. In the meantime, the interpreter performs consecutive interpreting from the source language into the target language.

Since no special technical equipment is required for consecutive translation, the costs are lower than for simultaneous interpreting. For this reason, it is the most commonly used interpreting method for short or small organizations and events, press conferences, business meetings or legal processes such as courts and hearings.

Consecutive Interpreting

What is the Difference between Simultaneous and Consecutive Interpreting?

The two main categories of interpreting, which are often confused, are simultaneous and consecutive interpreting. English simultaneous translation and other language simultaneous translation services, also known as interpreting in real-time, is generally preferred in large organizations, conferences, symposia and meetings. Generally, several speakers from abroad take part in such long events. While the speaker continues to speak at his or her own pace, the interpreter performs the translation with a microphone and headphone elsewhere in the hall in a translation booth. The audience has the opportunity to listen to the speaker in his or her native language via headphones. However, since with consecutive interpretation translation and speech does not take place at the same time, the event may take longer than usual.

If you require consecutive interpreting in various industries and fields such as science, technology or law, we are there for you with our experienced consecutive interpreters!

Professional Consecutive Interpreting Solutions

In order to do consecutive interpreting, an interpreter must be specially trained in this field. Consecutive interpreting is done in a very short period of time, almost instantly, and requires different skills. These include note-taking and memory techniques while listening to the speaker, keeping what is being said in mind, long attention span, imagining the translation in mind and finally eloquence.

Consecutive interpreting is not a translation service that can be provided by any translator, since not everyone who speaks a foreign language has these skills by default.

In contrast to translation, interpreting is prone to errors, which you cannot simply go back and rectify. Therefore, consecutive Interpreting should only be carried out by experts.

  • Good command of the source and target language

Your questions

How is consecutive interpreting performed?

In consecutive interpreting, the interpreter listens to the speaker and waits for him/her to pause for interpreting. Based on the length of the speech, interpreter may choose to take notes or reminders while the speech is being delivered and interpreting is performed consecutively.

Where is consecutive interpreting used?

Consecutive interpreting is not suitable for multilingual events where attendees are the participants speaking more than one foreign language since everyone has to wait for the speech to be rendered into his/her language. Such a practice would cause the event last longer and decrease efficiency.

What are the advantages of consecutive interpreting?

When compared to simultaneous interpreting, consecutive interpreting is usually more affordable. It does not require special equipment such as interpreting booths, advanced audio systems as required by simultaneous interpretation. Since it does not require advanced equipment, it is usually more flexible.
